GeoDict Import & Image Processing
The Import & Image Processing module provides comprehensive solutions for importing, processing, and analyzing 2D and 3D material images. It enables users to transform raw image data from various sources—as well as CAD geometries—into high-quality digital material models ready for further simulation and analysis.
This module consists of two core components: ImportGeo-Vol for processing 3D volumetric images, and ImportGeo-CAD for importing and converting CAD data.
ImportGeo-Vol: Import, Process & Segment 3D Images
ImportGeo-Vol transforms 3D images of real materials—captured through techniques such as micro-CT or FIB-SEM—into digital material twins. The resulting digital twin, with each voxel assigned to a specific material phase, serves as the foundation for further analysis and simulations with GeoDict.
Image Import
The ImportGeo-Vol interface supports a wide range of standard image file formats, including 8-Bit, 16-Bit, or 32-Bit data. Supported formats include: *.raw, *.vol, *.grw, *.rek, *.txm, *.am, *.vox, DICOM ( *.dcm, *.dmz, *.zip ), and image stacks such as *.tiff, *.png, *.jpg, and more. All GeoDict file formats can also be loaded and used in the image processing workflow.
Image Processing & Quality Improvement
Imported images can be enhanced using powerful filters and tools, including:
Image resizing: crop, embed, scale, down-sample
Image alignment: (auto) rotate, shear, straighten, mirror, permute, slice alignment, image registration
Gray-value adjustment: contrast enhancement, flickering correction, brightness correction
Image filters: non-local means filter (for noise reduction), median, sharpen, Gauss, morphological operations, watershed, ring artifacts removal
Image Segmentation
Segmentation methods range from simple automatic global thresholding to advanced AI-driven approaches based on neuronal networks. Additionally, GeoDict-AI allows users to customize their own neural networks to tackle almost any task involved in 3D image analysis.

ImportGeo-Vol offers exceptionally efficient solutions for processing large 3D datasets with minimal memory usage.
ImportGeo-CAD: Import & Convert CAD Data
ImportGeo-CAD enables the import of CAD geometries into GeoDict, converting them into voxel-based models for simulation and analysis.
Import Parameters
Before importing, users can modify key parameters such as:
Discretization step size (voxel length)
Origin of the geometry
Unit length (meter, millimeter, micrometer)
Import Options
Users may choose to import:
Voxels only (3D pixels)
Surface only
Both voxels and surface
CAD Visualization Features
Once an *.stl surface is loaded, various CAD-features are available, including viewing triangulation, faces, points, and transparency mode.
Applications
This module is essential for research and development in areas such as battery materials, fuel cells, filtration, digital rock physics, additive manufacturing, and pharmaceutical formulation, where accurate image-based material characterization is critical.
After completing the processing and segmentation phases, various other GeoDict modules can be used for comprehensive material analysis—such as PoroDict for pore-space analysis, MatDict for examining individual material phases, GrainFind for granular media analysis, and FiberFind for nonwovens and fiber-reinforced composites.
